Since the synthesis of urea in 1828 organic chemistry has become increasingly important to all aspects of society, producing a wide range of chemicals we find essential today. However, the step-wise process of classic chemical synthesis is costly, in terms of time, solvents, and waste. The development of cross-dehydrogenative-coupling reactions in 2003, with the direct generation of C-C bonds from C-H bonds, is a paradigm shift towards efficient synthetic design.
